This is Adam Kwitko reporting from the 2017 Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon AKA, the STWM and it feels a little familiar…..So let’s see how much I’ll slow down on the half marathon.
The Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon is one of Canada’s premiere road races, holding IIAF Gold Label status and where the Marathon acts as the Canadian Marathon Championships. The race has been broadcasted live on a combination of YouTube, athleticscanada.tv and the STWM website since 2012, but finish watching my video before you head on over there.
About 23,600 people registered across this race’s 3 distances: 7,600 in the 5km = 11,000 in the half marathon and 5,000 in the full marathon distance. At the 19 KM mark, we were treated to this 5 second video that we were invited to record at the race expo prior to the race, provided by Scotiabank and Sportstats. Hey look, that’s meeeeeeeee!
My Suunto Spartan Sport GPS watch measured only 58 meters of vertical gain for theHalf marathon, making the STWM a pretty flat half marathon by anyone’s standards.
All half marathon finishers received this finisher’s medal, Marathoners received this one in addition to this cotton shirt at the race expo and some other swag, most notably a $50 HelloFresh gift card.
Marta Megra from Ethiopia won the woman’s marathon and Philemon Rono from Kenya won the men’s marathon, breaking the Canadian all-comers record in the process, earning him a $50,000 bonus on top of the $25,000 1st place prize purse in the process. While Leslie Sexton from London, Ontario was the top Canadian Woman on the day, winning the 2017 Canadian Marathon championship title with Trevor Hofbauer from Calgary, Alberta winning the men’s 2017 Canadian Marathon title
