The 2016 New England Spartan Race season gets underway this weekend at Mountain Creek Resort in Vernon, New Jersey with the 13+ mile Beast and 26+ mile Ultra Beast distances. The weekend started with the Ultra Beast starting just after 6am on Saturday with supposedly 1000 registered, followed by the men’s Beast Elite division at 7:30am, the women’s Elite Beast devision at 7:45am, the competitive heat and open divisions following throughout the morning, early afternoon and then all over again on Sunday. Ultra Beast Spartans did two laps of the Beast course (plus an, additional Ultra Beast section during their first loop).
I ran the Ultra Beast in the new Salomon S-Lab Speeds, which is the new edition of the Fellcross that for the first time includes a mid-foot grippy section conceived for gripping fallen trees on the trail but works great for gripping walls and ropes as well.
My Suunto Ambit3 Peak edition, set to maximum accuracy measured 30.5 miles or 49.12 kms for the Ultra Beast with 11,266 feet or 3434 meters of vertical gain so cut that in half for the Beast. See my GPS activity here and follow me on Strava while you’re at it.
Beast distance finishers received a Beast finisher’s shirt and medal while Ultra Beast Finishers received this Ultra Beast finisher’s medal and special edition New Jersey Ultra Beast finisher’s shirt.
